ABOUT

Dear Step One Alumni, Friends, Parents, and Grandparents,

It’s with gratitude and pride that I invite you to the launch of the community to learn more about what the next 35 years hold for Step One, our beloved ‘little school with a big heart’. Since our founding, Step One has nourished children’s confidence, creativity, and empathy. In our play-based environment children learn to communicate, negotiate, and create together. They learn that they can act on their world, building their self-identity and preparing to be thoughtful change-makers. Step One has been doing this work for a generation at our 60-year-old site. Now, we are pursuing important campus improvements that will ensure our spaces live up to (and enhance) our values well into the future.

Thanks to our teachers and the amazing architectural team of Kerstin and Andrew Fischer and their colleague Charlie Stott, of Stott Architecture in SF, we have a thoughtful plan whose elements support Step One’s mission. And with tremendous leadership from our Board, Campaign Cabinet, our Campaign Consultants Theresa Nelson and Mary Powell, and our Campaign Manager Lillian Archer, we have raised more than $1 million, over two-thirds of our $1.5 million goal. I am thrilled to share with you how the critical improvements funded by our Step Two project will jump start learning, increase safety, and build community:

• We will nourish community with The Gathering Plaza, Studio, and Conference Room, warm gathering spaces for children, teachers, parents, alumni, and the community as
a whole.
• Through new spaces such as The Studio and The Learning Kitchen, we will engage children in creative endeavors of engineering, mathematical inquiry, story-writing,
and the arts.
• We will support children’s understanding of the natural world with our new Jennifer Maxwell Nature Trail, revamped Garden Patches, and a thoughtfully designed
Learning Kitchen.

• We will facilitate children’s individual exploration and discovery through all these indoor and outdoor spaces where teachers can provide a variety of hands-on learning.
• We will demonstrate respect for our cherished teachers by offering a new Teachers’ Lounge and Conference Room: spaces to rest, recharge, investigate, and communicate.

Since 1981, Step One has served 2,000 children and their families. Now, with the Step Two Campaign, we are working to reinvigorate our space for the next 35 years of community building. We’re breaking ground on March 17th ! We are grateful for your support. And we can’t wait for what the future holds.
